Research and Development

TCS has assisted our clients in the design and construction of several new and renovated laboratories. Our experience and approach allow us to help our clients maximize the functionality of their space to accommodate existing and anticipated future needs. Our familiarity with a range of upstream and downstream process and formulation equipment helps us better understand and support the needs of our R&D clients. Our past and ongoing projects are highlighted below:

Parasitology Lab Renovation

TCS served as the lead Engineering Project Manager for this project which included the procurement, design, construction and qualification of a custom Thermo CRS robotic screening station. Existing offices were repurposed into supporting lab space. The project also included a sample preparation room, sample storage and insect diagnostic lab. New modular office space with supporting utilities were installed on site to house the displaced personnel.

Process Laboratory Reconfiguration and Renovation

Delivered under a fast-track design-build scenario, this project consisted of the reconfiguration of two traditional laboratories into one contiguous space to support the Client’s requirements for dynamic viroal process research and development activities. An optimized floor plan was developed and constructed that enabled the client to streamline laboratory processes and equipment, supporting their bioprocess platforms with integrated sophisticated equipment controls and novel dispoable systems. Four equipment bays were installed with dedicated recessed stainless steel utility panels and sanitary floor sinks. Benchtop casework with integrated utility services was added to house 7L cell culture biobundle bioreactors, a water bath, microscopes and other equipment. Equipment monitoring by the building management system was added for critical equipment.

R&D Laboratory Renovations

This multi-year, multi-phased project consisted of renovations and upgrades to an existing fully operational facility. This +15,000 sqft renovation to the client’s +138,000 facility consisted of reconfiguration, relocation and upgrades to meet enhanced qualification requirements for their Master Seed, PCR, Clean Media, Microscopy and Zoonotic labs. The project was implemented to meet the client’s objectives of replacing old autoclaves with units dedicated to decontamination or sterilization, establishment of protective entry/exit corridors and modifications of other existing areas to improve quality and separation of clean and dirty flows. Conference rooms and offices were also included.

R&D and Manufacturing Facility Due Diligence

TCS provided Engineering Project Manager consulting services to travel on behalf of our client, to Worthington, MN, to perform a facility assessment and due diligence of a recently acquired leading US custom made vaccine (CMV) manufacturer and private diagnostic laboratory, producing USDA licensed autogenous biologicals and inactive, nontoxic biologicals.
